Let’s Be Honest… You Want to Look Good in Vacation Pictures (Here’s How I Prep My Skin)

May 20, 2026

Written by Cynthia Tieche

I don’t travel thinking, “I need to look perfect.”

But I do think:
“I want to look like I feel good.”

Because there’s nothing worse than:

  • finally being somewhere beautiful
  • taking pictures
  • and thinking… why do I look so tired?

And most of the time?

It’s not the lighting.
It’s not the camera.

It’s the prep.

The Truth About “Vacation Glow”

There are two versions of vacation skin:

Version 1: Planned Glow
  • smooth
  • hydrated
  • even tone
  • looks effortless
Version 2: Survival Mode
  • puffy
  • dull
  • inflamed
  • breaking out

The difference is not luck. It’s timing.

Timing Your Treatments
Botox / Dysport

Do NOT do this a few days before your trip.

This is something that should be maintained year-round—usually every 3–4 months—to keep your face looking consistently refreshed.

If you’re new to it before a trip, give it a few weeks to settle so you have time for any touch-ups before you leave.

Ideal timing:
2–4 weeks before travel

Microneedling / PRP Facial

One of my favorites.

Do it about 3–4 weeks before travel and your skin looks:

  • tighter
  • smoother
  • brighter

It’s that glow where people can’t quite figure out what you did.

I love this one… it might actually be my favorite.

Lasers

Lasers like CO2, hair removal, and photofacials are amazing—but not last minute.

Give yourself at least 4–6 weeks to heal properly. Your skin needs time to calm down, rebuild, and actually give you that glow you’re doing it for.

The biggest mistake I see is people doing something too close to a trip and then dealing with redness, sensitivity, or peeling when they’re trying to be out in the sun and taking pictures.

Plan ahead and let your skin do its thing.

And never forget sunscreen after them—your skin is more sensitive, and this is where you either protect your results… or undo them very quickly.

What I Actually Bring With Me When I Travel

I don’t check a bag just for skincare… but I also don’t wing it.

ZO Skin Health

I use it every day—travel or not.

My personal regimen for oily, acne-prone, aging skin:

Cleansing, exfoliating, protecting… it’s all part of my routine.

And I’m not kidding—I'm more upset if I forget my skincare than an outfit. I can buy clothes anywhere…

…but not my ZO

Sunscreen (Non-Negotiable)

Not gas station sunscreen.

Medical-grade, ZO broad-spectrum protection, I mentioned this above.

Sun damage is cumulative—and it will show up later.

Jane Iredale Makeup

This is the only makeup I ever wear.

It’s clean, mineral-based, and:

  • doesn’t clog pores
  • helps protect skin
  • goes on easily even when I’m exhausted

My personal regimen for oily, acne-prone, aging skin:

  • Smooth Affair Face Primer (makes everything go on smoother)
  • PureMatch Liquid Concealer (for any uneven areas)
  • Beyond Matte Foundation (when I want fuller coverage)
  • Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder
  • PureBronze Matte Bronzer (adds a natural glow)
  • Hydration Spray (I NEVER skip this—melts everything together so it looks like skin, not makeup)

It makes me look like I have it together… even when I don’t 😅

Protect What You Just Invested In

You can do all the prep in the world…

But if you:

  • skip sunscreen
  • don’t hydrate
  • overload your skin

You’ll undo it fast.

Skin care while traveling isn’t complicated.

It’s just consistent.

A Little Reality Check

Everyone wants beach pictures…

Until they:

  • slept 3 hours
  • ate airport food
  • had salty dinners + drinks

…and wake up looking like they retained enough water to float.

That’s not “just vacation.”

That’s your body reacting.

The Bottom Line

Looking good on vacation isn’t about doing more.

It’s about doing the right things at the right time.

When you prep correctly:

  • your skin looks better
  • your makeup goes on better
  • your pictures look better

But more importantly…

You feel better in your own skin.
