Microneedling and RF Microneedling

Book An Appointment
The increase in cell turnover and the production of new collagen and elastin fibers makes Microneedling a viable treatment option for a vast array of skin problems, from acne and sun damage to wrinkles and aging skin and everything in between!
Two Ways to Improve Skin Texture, Firmness and Collagen

Microneedling treatments create tiny, controlled channels in the skin to stimulate the body’s natural renewal response. Over time, this may support collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores and certain acne scars.

Recharge Clinic offers both traditional microneedling and radiofrequency—or RF—microneedling. The best option depends on your skin, concerns, desired results and tolerance for downtime.

Traditional Microneedling

Traditional microneedling uses very fine needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin without adding heat.

It may help improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Mild acne scarring
  • Dull or aging skin
  • Overall skin tone and radiance

Traditional microneedling is a good option for patients who want gradual skin rejuvenation with relatively limited downtime.

Microneedling With PRP

PRP may be added to a traditional microneedling treatment. Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and applied to the skin after the microchannels are created.

This combination may provide additional support for collagen production, skin renewal and overall skin quality.

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling combines controlled microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the surface of the skin.

The added heat allows the treatment to target deeper layers than traditional microneedling and may provide stronger support for collagen remodeling and skin firmness.

RF microneedling may be considered for concerns such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Crepey skin
  • Uneven texture
  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Areas needing deeper collagen support

Because RF microneedling is a more intensive medical procedure, treatment settings must be carefully selected based on the patient’s skin, treatment area and goals. The FDA has warned that improper RF microneedling can cause serious complications, including burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve injury, which is why trained medical providers and appropriate device settings matter.

Traditional Microneedling vs. RF Microneedling
Traditional microneedling may be preferred when:
  • You want general skin refreshment
  • Your concerns are mostly superficial
  • You want to improve texture, pores or mild scarring
  • You prefer a gentler treatment
  • You want to add PRP
RF microneedling may be preferred when:
  • Skin firmness is a primary concern
  • You have deeper acne scarring or texture concerns
  • You want treatment to reach deeper layers of the skin
  • Your provider recommends a more intensive collagen-remodeling treatment

RF is not automatically “better.” Some patients are better candidates for traditional microneedling, while others may benefit from RF. Your provider will recommend the option that best matches your skin rather than simply choosing the strongest treatment.

What to Expect

A topical numbing cream is typically applied before treatment. Patients may feel pressure, warmth, vibration or mild prickling during the procedure. For additional comfort, patients may choose to add Pro-Nox, a patient-controlled nitrous oxide and oxygen system that can help reduce anxiety and discomfort during the treatment.

After traditional microneedling, temporary redness, sensitivity and mild swelling may occur.

RF microneedling may cause more swelling, redness, tenderness or pinpoint crusting because it uses both needles and heat. Downtime varies depending on the treatment depth and settings.

Improvement develops gradually as collagen remodeling occurs. A series of treatments spaced several weeks apart may be recommended, followed by maintenance based on your skin and goals.

Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Your Recharge aesthetic provider will evaluate your skin, discuss your concerns and help determine whether traditional microneedling, RF microneedling, PRP microneedling or another treatment is the best fit.

Microneedling may also be combined with medical-grade skincare, chemical peels, injectable treatments or laser services as part of a personalized long-term skin plan.
