Reduce the Appearance of Spider Veins and Visible Blood Vessels

Small red, blue or purple veins can appear on the legs, face and other areas of the body. Although they are often harmless, they may make some patients feel self-conscious about their skin.

How Does Laser Vein Treatment Work?

The laser delivers controlled energy through the skin to target pigment within the visible blood vessel. The treated vessel absorbs the energy, causing it to gradually close and become less noticeable as the body clears it over time.

The surrounding skin is protected as much as possible through careful treatment settings selected for the patient’s skin and the vessel being treated.

What Can Be Treated?

Laser vein treatment may be appropriate for certain:

• Spider veins
• Small superficial leg veins
• Facial vessels around the nose, cheeks or chin
• Small red or purple visible blood vessels
• Areas of clustered superficial vessels

This treatment is not intended for every type of vein. Larger, raised or painful varicose veins may be caused by underlying venous reflux and often require evaluation by a vascular specialist.

Laser Treatment or Sclerotherapy?

Laser treatment and sclerotherapy can both be used for visible veins, but one may be more appropriate depending on the vessel.

Laser treatment may be preferred when:

• The vessels are very small or difficult to inject
• The veins are located on the face
• A patient wants to avoid injections
• The vessel’s size and color respond well to laser energy
• Sclerotherapy is not appropriate for that patient

Sclerotherapy may be preferred when:

• The leg veins are larger or more easily injected
• Reticular or feeder veins are contributing to the visible vessels
• The provider believes an injectable treatment is more likely to produce the desired result

Sclerotherapy is commonly used for spider and small varicose veins, while surface laser treatment can be particularly useful for smaller vessels and facial veins. The best approach depends on the individual vein pattern.

What Does Treatment Feel Like?

Patients may feel brief warmth, snapping or stinging as the laser pulses are delivered. Comfort varies by treatment area and individual sensitivity.

Most treatments are relatively quick, and many patients return to their usual activities shortly afterward.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Some vessels improve after one treatment, but multiple sessions are often needed. The number of treatments depends on:

• The size and depth of the vessels
• Their color and location
• Your skin tone
• How your body responds
• Whether new visible vessels develop over time

The veins may darken temporarily before gradually fading. Improvement continues as the body processes the treated vessel.

What to Expect After Treatment

Temporary redness, swelling, warmth, bruising or sensitivity may occur. In some cases, the vessel may initially look darker or more noticeable before fading.

Your provider may recommend that you temporarily avoid:

• Hot baths or showers
• Saunas
• Vigorous exercise
• Excessive sun exposure
• Products that irritate the treated area
