On the surface of the skin, the laser’s heat energy vaporizes impurities and bacteria that cause blemishes and dull appearance and below the surface, the heat energy stimulates an increase in the production of collagen and elastin fibers, resets overactive sebaceous glands, and enhances the body’s natural cell turnover rate to remove damaged cells faster and replace them with new, healthy cells. This not only reveals clean, bright skin and reduced inflammation from acne and irritation, but also improves skin health from within for long lasting results and reverses the symptoms of aging.

So how does the Carbon Laser Facial work?

Liquid carbon is applied to the face and allowed to dry on the skin. Liquid carbon attaches to excess oil and impurities in pores at a molecular level using dispersion forces, bonding to the molecular structure of dirt, debris, sebum (oil), and dead skin cells. As it dries, the bond becomes solid and any toxins and impurities in the skin are now stuck to the carbon. Carbon molecules are also highly conductive and their dark color attracts laser light energy to them. When the laser light hits the dried carbon, the carbon molecules absorb the light and heat energy to the point where they burst. This reaction creates mini explosions that vaporize the carbon completely. Since the dried carbon was bonded to impurities and bacteria, they are vaporized as well, leaving the pore cleared of anything that was clogging it! 

This surface reaction reveals an exfoliated, clear skin appearance, and below the surface, skin rejuvenation begins. The heat from the laser energy penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin and the mini explosions release heat energy as well. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, which increases the production of collagen and elastin fibers to rebuild skin structure and elasticity and increases the proliferation (production) of new, healthy skin cells. The presence of these new skin cells increases the rate of cell turnover, the process in which damaged and dead skin cells are pushed to the surface of the skin and shed off.

What’s the process and how long does it take to see results?

Unlike some of our other laser facial procedures, there is very little discomfort felt during this treatment. Some patients describe the feeling as slight tingling or pinching but nothing seriously painful. We offer all patients the option to be numbed topically to ensure their comfort during any facial procedure but it is not required for this treatment. After the face is cleansed, the liquid carbon is applied and allowed to dry completely and bond to impurities. Once the carbon is dry, the laser is passed over the face, vaporizing the carbon and impurities in pores as it goes. The whole process takes about 20 minutes to complete and there is no necessary downtime afterwards. Patients may experience some slight redness and feel like their face is warm immediately afterwards but that typically subsides within a few hours. Results can be seen after just one treatment, pores will be clear and less visible and skin will be brighter and softer. It is typically recommended that patients receive between 4-6 treatments, spaced out at least 2 weeks apart, to experience best results and long-lasting improvement in skin health and appearance. We also suggest that patients come back once every 4 months for a maintenance session after their initial treatment plan in order to prevent excess buildup in pores and remove any toxins that may be present.
