The Guy Who Tried It… and Quit
I had a patient come in last week with his wife.
He didn’t want to be there.
He had already tried testosterone therapy at another clinic and had a bad experience. His wife was already a patient of ours and finally convinced him to come in.
He said,
“I don’t think it’s my testosterone. I already tried that… and it didn’t go well.”
I told him, “No problem. Walk me through what happened.”
And honestly… this is where testosterone therapy starts getting a bad reputation.
Because in many of these cases, it’s not that the patient didn’t need testosterone.
It’s that the treatment wasn’t done correctly.
In his case, he actually did need testosterone therapy.
But a few key things were completely missed.
First, dosing and frequency.
He was getting injections, but the provider didn’t understand how important proper timing is. If you don’t space injections correctly, you create a roller coaster. Peaks and crashes. Mood swings. Energy swings. That alone can make someone feel worse than before.
Second, lab monitoring.
Testosterone therapy doesn’t just affect testosterone.
It can impact:
If those aren’t checked… and more importantly, understood… it doesn’t matter how much testosterone you give someone. They’re not going to feel right.
After I explained what likely went wrong, everything clicked for him.
He said, “That actually makes sense.”
At first, I told him we could wait. No pressure.
But he was tired of feeling the way he felt… and he decided to give it another shot.
He followed the plan.
He showed up for follow-ups.
We adjusted based on labs and how he felt.
And he did great.
He felt like himself again.
And more importantly… he was glad he didn’t give up on it.
Here’s something most people don’t know.
In medical school, nursing school, or PA school… you do not get deep training in testosterone, hormones, or hormone replacement.
It’s just not a major focus.
So unless a provider goes out of their way to study this in depth… they don’t have the knowledge base to do this well.
And right now, there are a lot of weekend courses out there.
That’s part of why you’re seeing hormone clinics on every corner.
But a weekend course doesn’t teach you how to manage real patients long-term. It doesn’t teach you how to adjust, troubleshoot, and fine-tune.
That comes from experience.
I’ve treated thousands and thousands of patients at Recharge Clinic for hormone replacement therapy.
Before I even started, I took multiple courses, studied extensively, and did my research.
But the truth is… the majority of what I’ve learned came from actually treating patients.
When you’ve managed over 25,000 cases, you start to understand the patterns.
This isn’t something I dabble in.
This is what I do every day.
I hear this all the time:
“I tried testosterone. It didn’t work.”
“Actually… I felt worse.”
So they stop.
And now they’re convinced testosterone just isn’t for them.
But most of the time… it’s not testosterone that failed them.
It’s how it was done.
Over the last several years, testosterone therapy has become a lot more accessible.
That’s a good thing.
More awareness.
More conversations.
More men actually looking into their health.
But there’s a downside.
Not everyone offering testosterone therapy truly understands it.
And that leads to:
Hormones don’t work like that.
This isn’t flipping a switch. It’s more like tuning an instrument.
Let’s break down where things go wrong.
Too high:
Too low:
You end up stuck in the middle… doing the work but not feeling better.
Proper dosing isn’t about hitting a number.
It’s about finding your range.
Testosterone therapy without labs is like driving without a dashboard.
You need to track:
These aren’t optional.
This is how you stay safe and actually feel good.
This happens more than people think.
Start testosterone… and then nothing.
But your body changes.
Your treatment has to change with it.
This is the wild west.
I get the appeal. It’s easy. It’s cheaper.
But I’ve seen the fallout:
Without oversight… you’re flying blind.
Topicals sound simple.
Rub it on and go.
But in reality:
Absorption varies. Levels fluctuate. There’s risk of transfer to others
For some men, they work. For many, they lead to inconsistent results and frustration.
That’s why injections or pellets are often better options.
More stable. More predictable. More effective.
When it’s done right, it’s not complicated… but it is intentional.
It includes:
This isn’t a one-time decision.
It’s a process.
And when it’s done correctly… it doesn’t just change lab numbers.
It changes how you feel every day.
If you’ve had a bad experience with testosterone therapy, it’s understandable to hesitate.
But don’t confuse a bad experience with a bad treatment.
There’s a difference.
Because when this is done right…
It can change your energy, your focus, your drive, your body, and your quality of life.

When properly prescribed and monitored, it can be safe long-term. The key is ongoing oversight and lab work.
Not always. It depends on the cause. Some men improve naturally, others need longer-term support.
Testosterone can convert to estradiol
. If it rises too high, you may see mood changes, water retention, or lower libido. This is why monitoring matters.

If you’ve tried testosterone before and it didn’t go well…
It may be worth taking a second look.
Not at the hormone.
At the approach.
