Low testosterone

"I Didn't Feel Like Myself Anymore" — The Truth About Low Testosterone

June 1, 2026

Written by Steve Tieche MD

About 15 years ago, I could feel myself starting to run down.

I didn’t have the energy I used to. And I’m hard on myself… so I kept thinking back to when I was in college, med school, residency. Back then, I could run on one cup of coffee and barely any sleep.

Now?
I was drinking coffee from the minute I woke up until dinner time… and I still couldn’t keep my eyes open.

I’d come home and want to do nothing but sleep.
No hobbies. No real life outside of work. Just work… and crash.

This didn’t happen overnight.
It crept up slowly over years and years… and I just accepted it.

Until I didn’t.

I started doing my own research. That’s when I really began studying testosterone—what it does in men, and what happens when it starts to decline.

That was the turning point for me.
That’s what opened my eyes to functional medicine.

My background is in anesthesiology. It gave me a strong foundation, incredible training, and experiences I’ll always value.

But functional medicine?
That’s a completely different ball game.

When I started testosterone therapy myself, everything changed.

And I don’t mean 6 months later.
I’m talking within a couple of weeks… it was almost immediate.

Energy came back.
Drive came back.
I felt like myself again.

Not long after, my wife went through something very similar. I told her, “You need to look into this.”

Fast forward to now…

I’m 67 years young.
I wake up early to work out.
I work 6 days a week most weeks.
I go home and work on a small farm.
And I have an almost 4-year-old.

I work circles around guys half my age.

That’s the short version of how Recharge Clinic came to exist.

Cynthia and I were the first patients.
And when we started feeling this good, we knew we wanted to help other people feel the same way.

In this blog—and the next couple—I’m going to walk you through testosterone therapy:

What it is
Who actually needs it
How to do it the right way
And why so many treatments fail

The Quiet Burnout

It usually starts subtly.

You feel more tired than you used to.
Not “I need a nap” tired… more like your battery never fully charges anymore.

You push through the day, but everything takes more effort than it should.

Your focus isn’t sharp.
Your patience is thinner.
Your sleep doesn’t restore you the way it used to.

You’re functioning.
But you’re not thriving.

And most men do what they’ve always done…

Ignore it. Push harder. Assume it’s just part of getting older.

The Conversation Men Avoid

Here’s the reality: men don’t talk about this.

Not openly.

They don’t sit around saying:
“My motivation is gone.”
“My sex drive isn’t what it used to be.”
“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”

Instead, it gets labeled as:

Stress
Work overload
Aging
“Just a phase”

Meanwhile, women—through pregnancy, postpartum, menopause—are often much more proactive about addressing hormonal changes.

Men?

They wait.
And wait.
And wait…

Until something forces the issue.

What Low Testosterone Actually Feels Like

Low testosterone isn’t just about sex drive. That’s the tip of the iceberg.

This is what I hear every single week in clinic:

Energy drops that don’t match your lifestyle
Increased belly fat despite working out
Loss of strength or slower recovery
Brain fog that makes simple decisions feel harder
Decreased motivation… like your internal drive just dimmed
Emotional flatness or irritability

It’s not dramatic. It’s gradual.

Which is exactly why so many men miss it.

They don’t feel “sick.”
They just don’t feel like themselves anymore.

The Bigger Picture Most People Miss

Now let me slow this down for a second.

Testosterone matters. But it’s not the whole story.

Your body isn’t a single switch. It’s a control panel.

Testosterone is one dial.

But there are others that matter just as much:

Thyroid → metabolism, energy, brain function
Adrenals → stress response, cortisol balance
estradiol  (yes, men have it too) → mood, libido, body composition

If you only adjust one dial and ignore the rest…

You might feel a little better.

But not fully optimized.

And that’s where a lot of men get frustrated.

Where This Is Headed

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

And more importantly… you’re not broken.

There’s a reason you feel this way.

But here’s where things start to get messy…

Not all testosterone therapy is created equal.

Some men feel incredible.
Others feel worse.
Some never feel much at all.

We’re going to break down the biggest mistakes happening right now—and why testosterone therapy has a bad reputation in some circles.

❓ FAQ

What age does testosterone decline?

Testosterone typically should start to decline around age 30, however with recent increases in stress, environment, food etc we are seeing guys even in their early 20’s with low testosterone. How much you feel it depends on lifestyle, stress, and overall health.

Can stress lower testosterone?

Absolutely. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which suppresses testosterone over time. Poor sleep and burnout make it worse.

Can you fix low testosterone naturally?

Sometimes—especially if it’s driven by sleep, diet, stress, or weight. But for many men, especially as they age, optimization often requires a more targeted approach.
