Regenerative Therapies, Treatments, Stem Cells

Thinking About Traveling for ‘Stem Cell Therapy’? Read This First.

June 10, 2026
Written by: Dr. Steve Tieche.

I’m going to say something that might not be popular.

But it needs to be said.

There are clinics—right here in our own city—sending patients out of the country for “stem cell treatments.”

And on the surface, it sounds exciting:

  • cutting-edge
  • advanced
  • not available in the U.S.
  • “worth the trip”

Until you start hearing what actually happens to some of those patients.

And we have.

What Patients Aren’t Being Told

Here’s the part that bothers me.

A lot of these treatments being offered overseas—or even marketed locally and performed elsewhere—are:

  • not regulated the way they are in the U.S.
  • not standardized
  • not always properly sourced
  • sometimes labeled “for research use only”

Which means…

  • There is no real accountability.
  • There is no consistent oversight.
  • And if something goes wrong… you’re on your own.

And Yes—We’ve Seen Things Go Wrong

This isn’t theoretical.

We’ve seen patients come back with:

  • severe inflammatory reactions
  • infections
  • worsening pain instead of improvement
  • no real follow-up plan

They were promised something revolutionary.

What they got… was unpredictable.

Follow the Incentives

Let’s be honest for a second.

There is a massive financial incentive behind this space.

Some clinics:

  • charge tens of thousands of dollars
  • bundle “luxury medical travel” experiences
  • create urgency and hype
  • position it as something you can’t get safely here

And patients trust them.

Because they want to believe it’s the answer.

But when the primary driver becomes profit instead of patient safety…

That’s when bad decisions get made.

The Ethical Side No One Talks About

This is where the conversation gets uncomfortable—but important.

Some of these treatments involve tissue sources that raise serious ethical questions, especially when it comes to how that tissue is obtained and used.

And most patients:

  • never ask
  • never get a clear answer
  • or don’t even realize they should be asking in the first place

You should know exactly what is being put into your body, where it came from, and how it was processed.

Anything less than that is not okay.

There Is a Safer, Smarter Way

Here’s the part I want to be very clear about:

You do not need to leave the country to access regenerative medicine.

There are options—right here—that are:

  • regulated
  • ethically sourced
  • manufactured under strict medical standards
  • designed for safe, clinical use

The products we use fall under established guidelines for human tissue use and are specifically designed to support your body’s natural structure and healing processes.

That matters more than hype.

And This Is Where People Get It Wrong

Patients think the more aggressive, more exotic, more expensive option must be better.

That’s not how biology works.

Healing isn’t about forcing your body into something extreme.

It’s about giving it the right environment to do what it already knows how to do.

Where PRP Fits In (And Why We Use It Together)

We use PRP (platelet-rich plasma) alongside these treatments all the time.

Why?

Because:

Together, they create a much more complete healing response.

Not hype. Not guesswork.

Just good medicine.

The Bottom Line

If you’re being told you need to:

  • leave the country
  • spend a huge amount of money
  • trust a process you don’t fully understand

Pause.

Ask better questions.

And make sure the person guiding you is putting your safety—not a sale—first.

➡️ Coming Next

In the next blog, I’m going to tell you a real story.

A shoulder injury.
An airport.
A situation most people would ignore…

…and what happened when we actually treated it the right way.

Because when this is done correctly, the results don’t have to be extreme to be impressive.

If you’re considering regenerative treatments and want to understand your options without the pressure, we’re here to walk you through it.

No passport required.

FAQ: Traveling for “Stem Cell” Treatments

Why do some clinics send patients out of the country?

Because certain treatments they’re promoting:

  • aren’t approved for use in the U.S.
  • don’t meet regulatory standards
  • or are being marketed in ways that wouldn’t be allowed here

That doesn’t automatically make them better—it often just means less oversight.

Are treatments outside the U.S. unsafe?

Many operate with:

  • less regulation
  • inconsistent sourcing
  • limited quality control

That increases risk, especially when you don’t fully know what’s being used.

What are the risks of traveling for these treatments?

We’ve seen patients come back with:

  • significant inflammation
  • infections
  • worsening pain
  • no follow-up care

And once you’re home, there’s often no accountability from the clinic that treated you.

Why are those treatments so expensive?

Many are packaged as:

  • “exclusive”
  • “advanced”
  • “not available in the U.S.”

But pricing is often driven by:

  • marketing
  • travel bundles
  • high-demand hype

—not necessarily better outcomes.

Are there ethical concerns with some out of the country treatments?

Yes.

In some cases, patients are not given clear information about:

  • where the tissue comes from
  • how it’s processed
  • whether it meets ethical and medical standards

You should always know exactly what is being used in your body.

Is there a safer option?

Yes.

There are regulated, clinically appropriate treatments available in the U.S. that:

  • follow strict safety standards
  • use properly sourced biologic materials
  • are designed for real patient care—not experimentation

Why not just “go big” and do the most aggressive option?

Because more aggressive does not mean better.

Healing works best when:

  • it’s supported properly
  • it’s done safely
  • and it respects how your body actually functions

Do I need to travel to get good results?

No.

When done correctly, regenerative treatments can be:

  • safe
  • effective
  • and accessible right here

Without unnecessary risk.
