Enjoy the Cookies. Start Before January!

October 7, 2026

By Cynthia Tieche, CEO, Recharge Clinic

Every September and October, I start encouraging people to consider getting started on their weight-loss plan. And every September and October, the holiday calendar becomes the argument against it.

There’s Thanksgiving. Christmas parties. Travel. Family coming to town. Special dinners, drinks, desserts and approximately seventeen things to do before lunch.

I understand! As a mother and a business owner, I’m certainly not looking at the end of the year and wondering how I’ll fill all my free time.

But when someone tells me the holidays are why they want to wait, my response is that this might be exactly the time to have some support and a plan.

Because if you’re waiting for life to settle down before you take care of yourself, I have a question: when, exactly, is that happening?

January still has responsibilities. February has birthdays and Valentine’s Day. Then somebody plans a vacation. Life keeps putting things on the calendar!

You’re allowed to get started while life is full.

And maybe next year, your New Year’s resolution could be something different. Learn Spanish! Organize the closet! Finally figure out what all those buttons on the remote do!

Wouldn’t it be nice to enter January with a routine already underway?

I’m not promising that starting in October means you’ll reach a certain weight by Christmas. Everyone’s starting point, health needs and progress are different. I’m suggesting that you give yourself the chance to build something now, instead of automatically putting yourself off for another three months.

Think about what you actually want from this season. Maybe it’s feeling more comfortable at a party, having everyday habits that support your energy, or enjoying travel and family visits without constantly thinking about starting over when you get home.

Those are good reasons to have a conversation now.

Here’s an exercise I’d love for you to try: take out your calendar and mark the celebrations that really matter to you.

Thanksgiving dinner. Christmas Eve. Christmas dinner. The weekend you’re hosting family. The annual Christmas cookie party.

For many of us, those occasions are a handful of meals spread across several months. Some of you have a much fuller social calendar, and that deserves a realistic plan, too. Count what’s actually there.

Then look at the days in between.

There are ordinary breakfasts. Workday lunches. Tuesday dinners that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. We can enjoy the special occasions without turning every day from October through December into one long holiday meal.

And let me be very clear about something: I am absolutely having my Christmas cookie party!

I hold it every year, I love it, and I have no interest in removing a tradition I enjoy just because we’re talking about weight management.

Food is part of how we celebrate. We bake, we gather, we share things we love. A favorite holiday recipe can mean much more than whatever is written on its nutrition label.

I’m not asking you to sit in the corner at your family gathering, staring sadly at everyone else’s plate. What a terrible party invitation that would be.

I want you to make room for the traditions you look forward to. Choose the foods you really enjoy. Sit down, taste them and be present with the people around you.

Let’s call those planned celebrations or enjoyment meals. Eating a Christmas cookie doesn’t need to become a moral crisis.

And it certainly doesn’t mean the rest of your week is ruined.

The next meal is simply another opportunity to follow your usual routine. You don’t need to skip meals to make up for dinner, fast as punishment or give yourself an exhausting workout because dessert happened.

You can enjoy a celebration and then carry on.

That’s where I want us to put our attention: the ordinary days.

A practical starting point is balanced meals with protein and fiber-rich foods, regular hydration, movement that fits your abilities and enough sleep. These basics belong in a weight-management plan alongside support for the situations that make consistency difficult, including busy schedules and social eating.

It doesn’t have to become a second job. Think eggs and fruit for breakfast, or a lunch with chicken, vegetables and beans. Keep a few dependable meal options available so dinner doesn’t require a committee meeting.

If you’re traveling, think ahead about when you’ll eat and what you can bring along. If work is packed, decide on lunch before you’re hungry and staring into a vending machine. Small decisions made ahead of time can make a busy day feel more manageable.

Make room for a walk when it works for you. Protect your bedtime when you can. Adjust activity to your health needs, and allow for recovery.

When I talk about being focused, this is what I mean: being intentional and consistent. There’s no prize for making your plan so demanding that you dread it.

For one person, a successful season might include weight loss. For another, maintaining weight through a busy few months may be an appropriate goal. Someone else may need to concentrate on regular meals, better sleep and keeping follow-up appointments.

You and your provider can decide what progress should look like for you.

At Recharge Clinic, our individualized weight-management programs give you a place to have that conversation. Our team can discuss nutrition (We have so many recipes for the holidays too!), activity, follow-up and prescription options when they’re medically appropriate. Your health history, current medications, needs and goals help guide the plan.

Tell the team about your real schedule, too. The travel. The long workdays. The celebrations you want to enjoy. A plan needs to be usable in the life you’re actually living.

As someone who is super passionate about helping people lose weight and feel their best, I want people to feel comfortable asking for help before they feel completely overwhelmed. You don’t have to arrive with everything figured out. That’s part of why you book the consultation!

So here’s my challenge for you this week.

Circle the celebrations you’re excited about. Choose two or three manageable habits for the days in between. Then put your own consultation on the calendar instead of writing yourself off until January.

Your holiday plans are going on the calendar. Let’s put you on it, too! Schedule an individualized medical weight-loss consultation with Recharge Clinic in Ocala, Lady Lake/The Villages or Clermont, or ask about telehealth weight management throughout Florida. We’ll help you explore a plan that fits your health, your goals and the traditions you love. Call 352-512-9996 or visit our weight-loss page to get started. January doesn’t have to be your starting line!

Imagine reaching January already knowing what your next step is. No dramatic restart required. You’ve been practicing, learning and getting support along the way.

Then you can choose that new resolution. I’m voting for something more interesting than repeating the same promise to yourself every year!

Enjoy your people. Keep your traditions. Have the cookies you look forward to. And give yourself a place on the calendar, too.
